Racism over dinner #1

George Floyd, 46, died on May 25 in Minneapolis while being arrested. He was held down by a police officer’s knee and died while pleading in pain that he ‘can’t breathe’. Eight minutes and 46 seconds later, he shut his eyes and stopped breathing and talking. He was pronounced dead shortly after. 

The Black Lives Matter movement was sparked by George Floyd’s death and as a mom to three boys to men, I wanted to open up the conversation at the dinner table. Here is a bit of what I learned from my almost 19, 17 and 10 year old sons and an excerpt from the Facebook Post I shared later that night.

How goes your racism and white privilege conversations at the dinner table…?  

I’m not making light of this even a little bit. I seriously want to know what is happening in your home…? 

I’ll start… I was surprised by how passionate I was, (frankly how threatening I was) around the concept of the boys watching the ‘news media’ as entertainment. I actually made them say out loud my threat… 

‘Mom will personally hunt me down if I EVER watch someone else’s pain as an audience member – my entertainment is NEVER at someone else’s expense’.

Wow.

I am quite surprised by my own passion about this.

Thank you to Kyle Hawke for the Guardian article posted, tracking the 400+ years beginning with the first slave sold on American soil. This showed the magnitude of what is happening and I read it to my boys.

I also read an article about FEAR of any kind of ‘establishment’ and what that can do to a society, and what that means. This of course is a super complex conversation, and tricky.

I tried reallllllllly hard not to judge but instead created a table where people weren’t interrupted or talked down to.

I asked more questions and only gave a few answers.

These conversations are important.

  • We also talked about apathy – and what it means.
  • We talked about white privilege and what it means to us today.
  • We talked about divisive thinking.
  • We role played the George Floyd incident in all positions.
  • We talked about empathy.
  • We talked about the difference between blame and responsibility.

It was a big night at the table over burgers, and it’s our privilege to talk about it from the safety of the white bubble we live in.

The boys very clearly, were passionate about how stupid racism is. 

How it makes no sense at all. 

How the colour of someone’s skin does not determine their value.

That was easy.

Some of the other pieces took more time and more insistence on my part to ‘stay with it’.

Okay… your turn – GO.

What was easy? What was hard for your household?

And whatever you did… it was a start.

However you handled it, you are trying.

Whatever you know or don’t know, you are offering a possibility for change.

You got this…

Keep going.

Please don’t be a bystander.

And you don’t have to be an activist either.

DO talk about it.

Apathy is entitlement.

Apathy is privilege.

Apathy is part of the problem.

What affects you affects me.

Here are some of the responses I received:

No dinner conversations needed here. My better half calls me out when I need to reconsider things that come out of my mouth and rightly so. Racism runs deep, deeper than we know, deeper than it’s comfortable to admit. We watched ‘The Hate U Give’ this afternoon. I cried, a lot. I was rattled by it, angered by it and that is good. Now I consider, where to go from here.

‘White Fragility’ will be in my hands for consumption as soon as my better half is done reading it.

We are talking over here too – my proudest moment was when my eldest said to us – “What can we do?”

We started the day with a video of 3 generations of black men at a demonstration. It is raw and difficult. We discussed why they were there and their different perspectives. Claus and I shed tears. We discussed white privilege, white saviorism, internalized and generational racism. We discussed how Canada thinks we aren’t as bad as the US and how Canada is racist. We discussed what it might be like if their dad were black and the boys were half black vs half German and half Jewish and how it is a privilege to hide their hidden minority. How there are people in the world who would hate them for being half Jewish… So heavy. I started a thread to share resources for white folks to start to dig into these subjects.

My partner is in the process of renouncing his U.S. citizenship to become Canadian, and is going through a lot of major life changes at the moment. So in a way, I was reluctant to bring it up, since he is under lots of stress. But I had made the decision to not remain silent anymore, so I said that I had been reading and watching and learning a lot about what’s happening in regards to racism these days. Even though I know that racism is one of the things that angers him, I noticed how I was a bit afraid to continue. After a few moments, he asked me to tell him more. So I did. About the struggles, and the mixed feelings out there, and the uncertainty of what to do, and that I’m not ok with being a silent anti-racist supporter anymore. That I am trying to find ways to be in action. He was receptive and interested. The biggest takeaway was my reluctance to talk about it. Perhaps it’s from having worked in a federal prison for 15 years and seen enough atrocities to last a lifetime. But that’s what privilege is, isn’t it? I get to choose how much atrocity to let in. They don’t. I will not leave them alone in it anymore.

Thanks for asking this, Tina. Here’s how it went in my household (with a seven year-old). Me: So, hey you know I read you that story that really upset you, that showed how black people escaped from slavery? Him: Uh, yeah. Me: Well look at this picture (photo of protests). This sign held by a kid your age says, “How could we come this far, to only come this far.” And then I go on to tell him about Ahmed Aubrey and George Floyd, and how horrible things like this happen every day, done by white people, to black people. And how here in Canada, most often horrible crimes like that happen to First Nations people most often. And then he said, “Can I go play now?”

Mine’s 11, and ASD, so our conversations aren’t quite as nuanced, yet, but we’re talking.

It’s a practice.

And it’s a fuel tank which is never empty and will never leave you.

Spirit is in our business.

Our work is sacred.

Everyday Adventures – BLOG

When I had Baxter (the basset hound), it would come to that time of the day when I knew he needed to get outside to collect some new smells and waddle around the neighbourhood. I would wrap up the work I was doing and say, “Let’s go on an adventure!”

You see, I could never use the word “walk” without making our departure a little crazy. All hell would break loose, with Baxter pacing in circles, whining, and “following” me by walking ahead and blocking my every step, lest I try to leave the house without him.

Now that Baxter is gone—he passed away in May—I have no need to go outside for a walk each day. But I have come to enjoy thinking of life as a series of adventures. It was easy in the summer as we found endless craft breweries to try out, hikes to hike, and outdoor movies to lie about in a park to watch. Everything was an adventure. Now that it’s fall, we’re settled into being at home, wearing slippers around the house, and launching Netflix marathons. The only adventure is seeing if we can squeeze in another episode of Downton Abbey before one of us drifts off into a slack-jawed slumber.

Perhaps I exaggerate a touch, but it’s partly true. It’s not okay with me that I spend more time at my desk than anywhere else. So I roped The Mister into a brainstorm session to plot out some Everyday Adventures we can enjoy together.

Here’s what we came up with:

  1. Choosing and preparing dinner when we’re both home. Much discussion and Pinterest-referring ensues, followed by a quick scour of available ingredients in the pantry and wine rack. Dinner for two becomes a playful indoor date.
  2. Hiking and biking and other sweaty things. This idea is a win all-around; we get exercise, we get fresh air, and we get to smugly go through the rest of the day in a glorious caloric deficit.
  3. Going to a whole new neighbourhood to grocery shop or sit in a coffee shop. I do this often when I am writing and looking for some fresh inspiration. A change of venue gives me a new perspective or a gentle nudge outside of my comfort zone. I figure it’s a great idea for relationships, too.
  4. Buying tickets for random events in the city. We have many mini-adventures to look forward to where we get to dress up (we are both working from home a fair bit and turning into rather cozy cubicle-mates, so this is always a good thing!) and make a date night of it. In the next few months, we will go see Danny Bhoy, Louis CK, and Interesting Vancouver and we’re having fun researching the before-and-after of the plans.
  5. Planning adventures in other places. We are in the process of booking an escape to somewhere hot when the Vancouver rain is at its most plentiful, and a weekend escape to Jasper. While the trips will be really fun, so much joy comes from the preparation we are doing now.
  6. Thrift store treasure hunting. One of us will get a nutty idea or decide we need something—I am on the lookout for a big, sloppy pair of overalls I can wear when I paint, for instance—so we will make a little outing to a big thrift store and spend a couple of hours goofing off as we look for treasures. Last time, we came across a GIANT teal sombrero and I wore it around the store as I looked through old prom dresses. So fun.
  7. Connecting with old friends and bringing them into the adventurous loop for games, dinners and catching up. Now that summer and all the frantic squeezing-in of outdoor fun has ended, it’s nice to connect again.

When we set the intention that we are here for “adventure” (however tame that might actually look), it helps us to find fun in whatever is going on. So what are your “adventures” going to be this week? How will you be intentional with your time? Tell me, tell me, and maybe I can steal your ideas!

Intimates in Colombia

I spent the last week and a half of February in Colombia: I attended a dear friend’s wedding, and then I relaxed at a tiny resort where the biggest decision of my day was choosing a hammock in which to have my afternoon nap. It was glorious. And quiet. In more ways than one.

See, Colombia isn’t a country that speaks a lot of English. And I am not a traveler who speaks a lot of Spanish. You do the math.

What I learned: People in Colombia wanted me to eat, to be safe, to have a good time.

I survived with big smiles, excited clapping, pointing at menus, Google translator (when I had wifi), listening carefully for familiar words, and speaking loudly and slowly. (Oh yes, I did.)

My last morning in Colombia had me feeling stressed; I had complicated transfers beginning at 4 am from a somewhat-remote resort via taxi to the nearby town where I would connect with two different buses before reaching the airport that would take me to a major city for a connecting flight back to Canada.

WHEW!

Add to the stress the fact that I didn’t have quite enough cash to pay my various drivers along the way and would need to find a machine somewhere early on. An English-speaking staff member at the resort had lovingly arranged my entire trip for me, but I knew it was unlikely she would be around at 4 am to translate any further.

I thought ahead: I packed and was ready the night before, set a couple of alarms, and translated phrases I thought I might need into my phone and took screen shots that I could show them along the way.

Here’s what happened: I accidentally ordered a bottle and not a glass of wine at dinner the night before I left, and not wanting to waste it, I drank a lot of it and basically passed out. I woke up in plenty of time for my alarm, in my clothes, with the lights still on. I checked out of the resort with ease, met my driver, showed him my translation that said “Can we go to a cash machine so I can pay you?” and off we went.

I felt completely safe and taken care of. When the first banco machin-o didn’t work for my card, we looked for another, and each time, he stood outside the door and waited for me. We were a team.

Soon, I wasn’t worried about making my connections and even grabbed the tiniest of cat naps once I was safely on the bus.

It’s like I always say: we are in relationship with everyone we interact with.

For those brief moments, with my gruff, Spanish-speaking driver, we shared an intimacy that I am still talking about a week later.

I think that universally there is desire to connect, the same way our bodies want to maintain health. If we shoot Botox into our face, our muscles actually work around it and want to get back to what’s normal. This is why, if you use poison to still your beautiful facial expression lines, you need to repeat the treatment over and over again.

Similarly, we humans crave connection. When we don’t have it, due to language barriers or other zany circumstances, we find our way back to it.

Relationship wants to happen.

Stop fighting it. So many times, we get in conflict with each other and don’t realize that things just want to run smoothly. Rather than get in the way of it all the time, I invite you to consider what you can do and say that will create more intimacy with the people in your life. How can you join with the people around you to become team mates?

Try it and let me know what you discover. You don’t even have to go all the way to Colombia (although you could—they are lovely people and they will be very amused by your excited clapping when you finally decide what you’d like to order for dinner!).

Trump – We are Part of the Problem

Trump We are Part of the Problem

Yes, like you, I have multiple opinions about whether Donald Trump is worth even a second of our consideration… but that is not what this post is about. I appreciate the video below for a number of reasons but in brief, here is why:

I have a real bee in bonnet about selling and the insanity in both the sales/marketing/branding profession and how we interact with it.  Part of my focus on TinaOLife is to bring up this conversation again and again, calling out those of us in the sales and marketing industry to get better at what we do.  In short, I’m asking if you are willing to fix something that is incredibly broken. We are indeed a blister in the sun.   And something tells me we’re about to burst.

A lot of factors are contributing to the rise in popularity of Donald Trump as a contender for the Republican nomination, but I’m only going to address ONE of them – because it’s the one that makes me itchy. Yes I do squirm just a little bit, biting my cheek on the inside and jamming my toes into my shoes trying to keep from screaming.  Bwahhhhh Grrrrrrahhhhhhhh!!!!  It’s like I want to throw up violently but I can’t.

TinaOLife Trump and Part of the Problem

 

So I’m going stretch us a little k?  I’m connecting the dots between sales, marketing, branding, message and our relentless chasing of the illusion of STATUS (and that’s all it is folks, an illusion).

We as sellers position ourselves and our message to you this way:

I know more than you.

I have more for you.

I sell more than anyone.

You want more.

I’ll give you more than anyone else can.

And then there’s the weird status thing we do around the pricing of our product, and the stories we make up to justify why people do or don’t buy our stuff:

When you say you can’t afford it – it’s not true.

When you say, I’m not sure yet – you’re just hiding.

When you say, I need time to think, – you’re making excuses.

Status.  We have such a magnetic pull to it. We want it.  You could say I’m doing it now by calling bullshit on sales tactics, and maybe I do.  It’s still worth examining don’t you think?

Status.  So then we decided that we live in an abundant universe, and that anything we want we can have simply by naming it, writing it down, and ultimately, manifesting it.  Therefore, all of the customers who aren’t reaching our pricing structure are the ones who are living in a false reality. It’s their fault, they simply aren’t thinking abundantly enough.

I’m not saying that this perspective is all hooey, and that The Secret, Lisa Nichols, Jack Canfield and all the others are wrong – I’m adding to the equation another question which is:  What kind of a charge (like an electric zap in the belly) do you get when you hold that perspective as true? Here’s what I mean: 

Wouldn’t it be interesting to get to the place as a seller or a buyer where there is no ‘charge’ at all around a price. It’s neither expensive or inexpensive, it’s just a number. It either fits a budget or it doesn’t.  It either matches the buyer/seller’s values or not. What if price wasn’t about STATUS at all?  I wonder how much we would be willing to charge and/or pay.

Why am I here when I’m talking about Trump, marketing and selling?

Because money is LOADED with electric charges and then fueled by our stories.

Because how we price our products often informs how we sell, market, and brand them. Here’s a kicker, most products are sold at the price of ‘what the market will bare’. 

Yet we are the market.

And we set it by what we’re willing to believe in.

Connect that back to Trump.  What are we willing to believe in and why? 

So let’s talk about honesty and marketing shall we?  We’ve become so ‘skilled’ at positioning, so ‘smart’ at messaging, so ‘strategic’ with our choice of words, colours, audience, timing, logos, hooks, offers, calls to action, reach etc… that when somebody shows up like Trump, and just speaks ‘his truth’ – it staggers us for a second, and we’re drawn to it. It catches us off guard. And then when ‘his truth’ gets louder, with less restraint, and with more Alpha-Dog in him, it comes off kind of refreshing somehow because he’s cutting through the noise – never mind how costly his perspective may be (again, think back to pricing – same story).

We are all so EXHAUSTED from being sold to by slick campaigns with sensational promises that this guy, because he’s ‘not a politician’, because he’s ‘not packaged’, because he IS ‘impulsive’, because he DOES ‘show his true colours’, becomes appealing. This guy has STATUS because he’s being ‘himself’ and lots of people are gobbling it up.

Again, you may ask, what does this have to do with sales and marketing… well, it’s the underpinning of our mistrust because we simply can’t get away from it.

Here’s my suggestion:  when people in sales, marketing and branding stop strategizing and start simply TELLING THE STORY of the PRODUCT or the STORY of their SERVICE – by SERVING THE STORY instead of the SALE, then we just may begin to trust voices of ‘reason’ again, and dudes like this won’t be given the time of day.

Imagine if we didn’t ‘sell’ being honest, we just were.

Imagine if we didn’t need to be ‘clever’ to attract an audience but instead, our straight goods became so crystal clear that the ‘right’ people could find us.

Imagine if sales people weren’t trained to overcome objections, if marketers weren’t taught how to ‘get inside the mind of consumer’, if branders didn’t ‘position’ the sale.

Imagine if the products we sold were good enough and our belief in them so deep and strong that we didn’t need to figure out the ‘formula’ to successfully sell them?

When we can all give up the insanity of trying to out play one another, perhaps bombastic, self-serving, opportunists like this guy, Mr. Trump, wouldn’t be so appealing. It’s not funny. It’s not entertaining. It’s not even scary (well, maybe it is), its really quite sad. Our culture has lost touch with it’s humanity, with our heart beat of being seen and known.

It’s time to be courageous, reclaim our power by being honest.

What do you say people in the sales, marketing and the branding industry… you with me? I’m not suggesting that we’re ultimately responsible for people like Trump getting to where he is, but I am suggesting that we’re part of the problem. The truth never needed to be clever. Good products never needed to be louder than everyone else, and consumers shouldn’t have to read between the lines in order to figure out if they can trust you and your brand or not.

Trump, with his blatant, boundary pushing and now rise to popularity is a lesson for all of us. He can cut through the noise because he’s just being him. Like him or not, he’s Trump and he’s pretty darn comfortable being that. If only we were too.

I have a problem with red tape.

I think I’m above it.

I’m on the phone.  Waiting.  wa wa wa w a i t i n g.  A small wave of impatience is building.  Tone Loc’s Funky Cold Medina is playing in my ear. What the hell is that doing being played on the ‘hold’ button of the hospital’s billing department.  Is that song even old enough to be musac?  Maybe it is. 

“So, I gave some to my dog when he began to beg
Then he licked his bowl and he looked at me
And did the wild thing on my leg

I’m a little entitled.  White chick, artist, living by the water, mom to three boys, hockey boys at that – the gear stinks, like S T I N K S, wife to a tall drink of water – surely being and STAYING MARRIED is like enough right?  I make cookies, but only the ones my kids will eat.  Nobody eats peanut butter cookies so guess what?  Now I don’t either. I mop the floor, make the beds, write, try to be innovative, raw, authentic blah blah blah… just frickin care, sometimes just FRICKIN CARING feels like that’s gotta be enough too you know?  I wash my face, stave off aging, use my eye cream, read ingredients, cut down on sugar, fucking survive, thrive find a voice through the insanity of cancer, BARF, rinse repeat.  I sign up to do a triathlon, make friends with old friends and gal pals I said dumb things to, read up on leadership – so many bloody books on leadership, when do I ever get to say with a CLEAR HEART that I AM A LEADER?  I stay current on the news – be mindful of my crush on Peter Mansbridge, collect the dust bunnies, get gas, sign permission slips, REMEMBER to sign permission slips, feel GUILTY because I fucking forgot the god damn stupid pink, no green, no blue, no BAHHHHHH what the hell colour was the permission slip this time?  Oh right… it didn’t have a colour, it was online… oh… I didn’t check my email.  I check my email, grocery shop with just the right list so I don’t spend too much, plan organic, buy bulk to save, think… think… think… let go of anxiety, get my ass to yoga, well, I say I’m going to do that, okay, so I say I’m going to get my ass to yoga, go to choir but not when I have a cold (like last night), feed my business, work my business, nurture by business… drink kombucha….

surely I don’t have to deal with the stupidity of RED TAPE too?  Surely I don’t have to SIT ON HOLD to deal with this STUPID BILLING THING!

I’m entitled.  I have a problem.

I’m on the phone with MSP (Medical Services Plan) to find out why my son who was born in 2009 did not have coverage in 2014 for a procedure done at the hospital just a year or so back, yet he received his shots in 2010 (no charge), went to emerg. for something dumb in 2011 (again, no charge), saw the doctor in 2014 (no charge), but only two months later he HAD NO COVERAGE?  And now I have a $2200 bill that is going to collections?  Are you kidding me?  WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED????

That was it. Done. All I had to do was call. No redtape.  No waiting.  No fighting.  No nothing.  I just had to call.

Oh Tara, you are such a fit and I am thrilled to announce you as one of TinaOLife’s Core Contributors covering all things relationship, in fact, you might even say that YOU are Where Relationships get Real.  Well, I do say that.

Here’s our story (TinaO’s perspective):

So I met this gal by accident which means on purpose.  I sat across from her at a BNI breakfast meeting and to be honest, as much as I’m a total hound for networking because I really do just love people, any kind of organized business thingy where we’re supposed to be ‘authentic’ and ‘non-pitchy’ yet the bottomline of why we are there is to get business and make our cash register ring…  these events always strike me as just odd, as in not quite honest but not quite false either (spank me now for speaking it as I feel it). The thing is, I can do these kinds of events, I’m even good at them, but still, they’re kinda weird to me.  ’nuff said – yet its probably the very reason why Tara made such a subtle yet significant impression on me.

Now when I go to a morning breakfast meeting, I see getting up, getting dressed, doing my hair (oh gawd really?), putting on lipstick (oh boy oh boy like reallllly?) and then leaving my house before 6am as a decision to further my education in people. As well, I see it as part of my active agreement with the universe/God/powerthatbe in order for the big magic we all allude to, to happen. One thing I know for sure is that nothing shows up for me unless I show up for it, thus the partnership.  So every now and then I put my cynicism aside (yes I can be a cranky codger) and I ‘show up’ at a networking event and do my do.  A few years ago, when I did that, I met Tara Caffelle.

We barely exchanged words – but who needs them when you understand the game of business networking.  The words we speak at these events are usually heavily rehearsed yet planned as hopefully authentic and packaged together as a 30 second elevator pitch to let the room know what we do so they can hire us right?  It’s not so much about who we are. That’s why I don’t pay too much attention to what people say at these events, but rather do how I feel when I experience them.

As I was taking the last few bites of my eggs benny, I knew that there was just something about this gal sitting across from me and a few chairs down that I wanted to get to know. So we did what you do at these things, we exchanged cards and she followed up.  Perfect.  Here’s what it looked like:

March 25th, 2014 – Hi Tina,  It was so great to meet you at BNI this morning – what a HUGE group that was!  I am a member of BNI Harbourside (we meet at the same restaurant on Wednesdays) and we’re only about 26 people, so that was a bit of a shock.  It seems like we have some great overlap and could likely have a fun, connecty kind of tea.  Let me know if you’d like to set that up in the next couple of weeks.  In the meantime, if you think of anyone having babies or adjusting to life with a newborn, the links to my workshops and website are below.  Have a great week and I will look forward to seeing you soon. Cheers, Tara

Why do I share all the drivel of booking and rebooking and apologizing and rebooking again???  Seems boring right?  Well, that’s life.   That’s what SHOWING UP and STAYING WITH IT looks like.  It’s not all fireworks and magnetic pulls to work together.   It’s simply a desire to inquire first, matched by commitment and follow through.
So we met at this place, The Laughing Bean.

and from our first kinda ‘search and discovery’ conversation, I was introduced to the concept of this guy: Chris Dierkes, Soul Interpreter.  It went something like this:
Tara:  chatty chat chat what I do who I am what I’m interested in what has happened to me… ‘and then my soul guy’
Me:  listening listening listening watching wondering wondering… ‘what did you say?’
So much more to come about this… Chris has become my ‘soul dude’ and he as well will have a regular piece on TinaOLife called just that:  Dear Soul Dude (but that’s for another announcement) – see… magic happens when we show up.  Okay, back to Tara.
So fast forward a few months later and over a beer with Tara on a sunny summer patio, I met this gal, her awesome friend and colleague:  Coach Michaella.

Holy crap!  What the hell happened?  is all I can say.  No kidding – we laughed so hard on that newly hot summer patio that I suffered dearly from my first inspiration hang over. We came up with a SNL Sketch called empha’sis’ that I swear made me pee (come on, three children, cut me some slack), as I clamored to get into my truck and head home. I had no idea that having such a good time could require couch time as recovery.
The three of us met up again last January to support each other’s vision for all that 2015 would bring.  Here’s a pic of them as they arrived in perfect West Coast style – yup, coffee in one hand, umbrella in the other. These kooky two women rock my world.    Little did the three of us know that my year would look nothing like we had planned, yet what we came up with was exactly what I needed.  I hope the same was true for them.

That year Tara launched Nookie November, 30 days of intimacy filled with silliness, sexiness and spontaneity.   Holy Dinah did that ever crack me wide open. It started out as sexy re-connection gift to my husband and it became so so so much more. I’ll share more about later.
When I was diagnosed with throat cancer last spring, Tara had her own big life stuff going on at exactly the same time.  We were two soul-inspired women trudging through painful muddy waters together yet completely apart.  When the dust had cleared for both us, Tara asked me to be a guest on her show Speaking of Sparkles and here it is:  Cancer, the wisdom of the body, getting off the rollercoaster of marriage and finally sinking into relationship.   
We became hooked.  p.s. I know, I know, I know, I need a new microphone because wowzers do I ever sound LOUD and fuzzy in this.  Well, turn down my volume just a bit and climb into the brainwaves of Tara and Tina.

When TinaOLife showed up as the answer to my professional home, I figured out pretty quick that as much as I’m all that and a bag of chips, I AM most definitely NOT THE ANSWER to everyone’s life questions.  I can’t be.  So if I’m going to take on this topic called LIFE and what it feels like to be REALLY LIVING, I’d better call in the giants who ignite that very thing inside of me.
Welcome Tara.  You’re a fucking rock star in my world.  You make dropping the f-bomb not just explosive, but sexy, crazzzy-ass funny and tender too. How can that be?  It must be you.

Is Your Knowledge on Ice?

Is your knowledge on ice

Ignorance on fire is better than knowledge on ice, or so they say.  This success strategy has served me well for a long time but has cost me dearly for an even longer one.

My whole life I’ve been a dive into the unknown kinda gal.  I do my best work in anything and everything I do when I know the least.  I race to the top in whatever I do and faster than most because I am very comfortable wearing Steve Jobs’ Reality Distortion Field and keeping my head down, my eye on the prize and look only at what I’m doing.

When I don’t know what I don’t know, there’s nothing to tell me that I can’t leaving only possibility.  This has been a brilliant results oriented success system for me.  From the outside everything looks great:  I do, I achieve, I am applauded, and then I move on. Wait a minute… that’s the kicker right?  The trap of this kind of success formula is that there’s little desire further the work once I’ve nailed the goal.  Why? Because I’m no longer ignorance on fire.  I’m now knowledge on ice, with no motivation to get warm.  And then it gets cold, freaking cold, like anxiety driven, worry filled night kinda cold as I sort out:

What do I do now that I know what I know?

How do I feed this success animal I’ve built on ignorance when my eyes are open to the whole picture now?

You may have heard this before too because I didn’t come up with it, and the person who taught it to me probably didn’t either:

Stage one = Uninformed optimism Stage two = Informed

Stage three is usually = Informed pessimism. 

Why usually?  Because it takes walking the double edge sword of all things in order to get to informed optimism.  It takes converting informed on both the positive and the negative side of it to give you wisdom.  Most of us just want the shortcut.  We don’t want wisdom. We want results.  We serve the bottomline or the adrenaline of achievement, or the satisfaction of belonging because we’re ‘worthy’ due to our accomplishment.  Come on now, ‘fess up.  Why do you go for challenges and incentives?  Why do you take risks?  What is usually your motivation for diving into the unknown?

You might say:  Because I’m curious Tina.  I’m a life-long learner.    

I say:  Cool.  Then what?  How do you let that learning LIVE?

For most of my professional life (up until now), I’ve been happily doing and achieving as ignorance on fire.  Wow… what a rush. There’s always something new to learn, the excitement of the unknown and then the reward of figuring shit out.  You could feed me this recipe for breakfast, lunch and dinner and all deserts and drinks too.  I EAT THIS UP!

But then I get a stomach ache. I’m frozen by what I’ve learned.  I can see the pot holes, the areas of growth that are needed, the dark corners and the stinky stuff that if cleaned up would make things even better.  Oh mannnn why do that when ignorance on fire has such a higher return?  Why implement anything I’ve learned when I can just go on learning new stuff?

I’m in the network marketing industry and this is a slogan that is thrown around at every ‘getting started’ training out there.  As organization builders in a sales and recruitment based business, our bottomline and our team’s confidence go up when we have new people starting their business with us.  We WANT FRESH FACES because it reminds us that this opportunity rocks, and you know what – it freaking does rock.  Ten years in, with all the knowledge I have and very little ignorance left, I can say without a shred of holding back, this is the best industry going out there if:

  1.  you wanna make lots of money with low risk or overhead.
  2. you wanna work part time.
  3. you like people
  4. you’re a life long learner.

But here’s the deal:  You gotta let go of the ignorance on fire thing and ditch the knowledge on ice thing too if you really want to enjoy the fruit.  Malcolm Gladwell talks about 10,000 hours to mastery.  Well, that’s about 7 years in a 15 hour/week network marketing business.  You sure as heck ain’t gonna be ignorance on fire for seven years.

Like any long term venture be it business, friendship, marriage, career, personal growth, whatever… the TRUTH of that story will always out over time and that means that the veil of ignorance will lift and knowledge with set in.   Nothing is without dark corners.  Nothing is without improvement needed.  Nothing is perfect and that’s what makes the whole darn thing worth investing in.

So… if you buy this whole Ignorance on Fire is Better than Knowledge on Ice thing, I challenge you to step into WISDOM and see what kind of satisfaction, freedom and true wealth lives there instead.

My wish for you is true freedom, is peace, is long term success and feeling good about what you do.

January 1st – Ten Reasons Why

What have I done?  Did I really decide to share my life with you every day? Doesn’t that require writing?  A commitment?  You see, I have this issue with ‘have to’s’, even when they start out as a ‘want to’.  No kidding.  Oh no… and then there’s that grammar and spelling thing.  I’m a pretty good speller but I’m not a detail gal.  Damnit, I’m going to have crazy ass mistakes out there for the world to see.  Okay, well, the world is a big place so, correct that:  I’m writing a blog post every day for the next 365 days for a lot of people to see.  

Yes I do care if it’s read.  

Yes I do care if it grows.  

Yes I do care if there’s an audience for this.

Come on now, if I wanted to write for myself, I’d write in my journal or I’d go for a hike and talk to myself (and yes I do these things too).    This is for you as much as it is for me.  So here goes:  I am writing a post to you, sharing my life with you, my insights, my stumbles, my FU’s, my ridiculousness and depth for the next 365 days because:  

TEN REASONS WHY… 

#1 – Having the world as an audience means there’s nowhere to hide, and with that, the gift of honesty continues to give generously – and likely more to me than to you.  

#2 – I know that I can’t say that I actually KNOW anything, as in for sure, as in take it to my grave, and I’m so tired of the expert industry – of the insanity of people thinking they know what’s best for people they don’t even know.  I mean, really? As if they could.   Yeeeeesh.  Nope.  This blog is an invitation for you to come on in and engage with what I think, what I notice, what I want to put public.  There’s freedom in being seen, and I hope my style stirs up a sense of wildness inside of you.

#3 – I do my best thinking when I’m not.  Writing, speaking and doing gets me out of my head so that what I think can just show up.  You’re my open stage for words to find my experiences.  Thank you for listening. 

#4 – Okay, that’s the fluffy truthful stuff, now on to the crap that dogs my trail:  it’s a monstrous challenge for me to commit to any kind of a daily action.  Yes I brush my teeth and sleep daily too, but even these I try to negotiate at times (spank me now).  Hands down, I’m a gold medal champion at resistance.  I even resist my resistance.   This bloody blog is going to bring all the stuckness in my resistance story up to the surface.  Blech. At newly 45 years old though, it’s probably about time.  I wonder what I’ll find.  

#5 – Chopping wood and carrying water is and has always been my most fulfilling accomplishment – because it isn’t one.  Do you know what I mean or have I lost you?  Chopping wood – like showing up simply because it’s what needed.  Carrying water – like doing the do because it’s what’s asked for.  It never occurred to me that I could set a goal (I hate goals) to chop wood and carry water.  The adrenalin that goes with setting, striving and reaching goals has cost me dearly in my life.  Sure I have a long list of accomplishments but who cares when there’s been little fulfillment.  365 days of blogging will become my daily practice.  I might even be re-writing my story about goals by living them in a new way.    

#6 – Inspiration is exhausting, but fulfillment is not.  I’m not even exactly sure why this is on the list, I just know it needed to be said.  

#7 – I like to write.  Correction: I love to write.  I love to listen to the words that come out of my fingertips.  That’s joyful for me.  

#8 – Words matter, and this is my way of saying so do I, so do you, so do we.  Our stories are our past and our future.  Oh boy, did I just say that I matter?  I did didn’t I?  That’s the name of my first book.  

#9 – I am very comfortable being ‘seen’ in glimpses, you know through photographs or on stage etc…, but over time, not so much.  Being seen is very different than being known.  What would my life be like if I was known? 

#10 –  After 365 days of being in my own witness protection program:  I suspect I’ll be more of who I came here as, and more of whom I designed to be.  That’s cool.  That’s really cool to me.  

Here’s to 365 days of Joy.  Oh wait a minute, I’m ahead of myself.  That’s for today.  Yes I am writing yesterday’s post today.  Yesterday was January 1st, a holiday and I don’t believe in working on holidays.  I need downtime too.  So this list of Ten Reasons Why is for yesterday, today.  Today I will also write today’s.
